Main Event Caterers Empowers and Endorses D.C. Gay and Lesbian Weddings with May 4th Seminar
WASHINGTON, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the Nation's Capital enacted groundbreaking legislation to provide equal marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples on March 9, 2010, couples have chosen to legalize their long-standing and loving relationships with a license and an appropriate ceremony.
The winner of the 2010 Caterer of the Year Award, Main Event Caterers of Arlington, Virginia, is partnering with Capital Pride to offer a Gay or Lesbian Wedding Seminar on May 4, 2010 at the Human Rights Campaign Equality Center at 1640 Rhode Island Avenue NW in Washington from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The event is free of charge to HRC members. Non-members may donate $10 per person to attend. Reservations may be made online at

The evening will feature an expert panel with noted speakers. Kathryn Hamm of GayWeddings.com will serve as moderator. Other panel members include noted chef Joel Thevoz, Chef d' Cuisine of Main Event Caterers, A.C. Warden, a non-denominational ordained minister, Susan Silber of Silber, Perlman, Sigman and Tilev, P.A. who is a noted expert on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender law, and Nancy Goodman, experienced event planner and executive vice-president of Main Event Caterers.
Designed especially for gay and lesbian couples in the DC area, the seminar will include information on applying for licenses and planning a ceremony and celebration that is uniquely their own. The evening will include conversation, complementary cuisine and Champagne. Departing couples will have a clear understanding of how to create an event that meets their unique requirements from a small Civil ceremony to a "dream" wedding in an elegant, historic or symbolic venue.
Said organizer Joel Thevoz: "While we have been serving gay and lesbian couples for years, the legalization of the marriage of same-sex couples in DC creates an exciting opportunity for these partners. While Main Event Caterers is noted for being gourmet, 'green' and gay-friendly, we felt it was time to come out into the greater community to share our expertise. We do not create cookie-cutter events and substitute two brides or two grooms for the top of the wedding cake. Instead, we share the couple's vision and enable it to become reality. It's exciting! Basically, the seminar is everything you want to know about planning a gay or lesbian wedding….but were afraid to ask. Fortunately, those days are behind us."
City officials estimated that the change in legislation will also have a positive impact on the DC economy creating 700 new jobs and contributing more than $17,000,000 annually. Forbes Magazine estimates that the gay marriage industry is a $16.8 billion national market.
The marriage bill was sponsored by David A. Catania and passed DC City Council by a vote of 11-2. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the legalization measure in December and spoke at a press conference on the first day marriages were performed saying that the weddings were a "great step forward for equality."
