ADELAIDE, South Australia, March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- After 10 years of painstaking research and deduction, South Australian inventor Richard Shepherd has published The Birth of Opal, showing how the natural process can be recreated to form synthetic opals with all the characteristics of genuine opals.

The opal is Australia's national gemstone, and approximately 95-97% of the world's opals originate from Australia, with 80% of these coming from South Australia.

Mr Shepherd has recorded his discoveries in his book The Birth of Opal, the most comprehensive study of the process of natural opal genesis and the only book in the English speaking world to investigate the science of opal formation both in nature and in the lab.

He is due to release a DVD entitled Simple Guide to Opal Formation which will reveal his unique method of creating genuine opals, including a step-by-step guide to making opals at home.

The book investigates the secrets of sedimentary opal formation and describes the definitive opal environment, explaining the geographical, geological and geochemical factors that are essential for the chemical reactions which form an opal.

Mr Shepherd's research casts new light on many of the myths and theories about how opals are formed, including the controversial theories of fellow Australian and self-taught geologist Len Cram, a creationist who claims his method of opal formation disproves the evolutionary theory that the opals unearthed today took around five million years to form.

The Birth of Opal also reveals for the first time the legendary secret electrolyte used by Len Cram to form opals.

Mr Shepherd says he first became passionate about the origins of opals when he was a teenager at school and the teacher's explanation of how they were formed did not make sense.

"It was from this moment that I decided to do my own research and discover the real truth about opal origins," Mr Shepherd said.

"My research continued on and off all these years, culminating in this book."
