Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD, Co-Inventor of the 'Bionic Eye' Elected President of the American Society of Retina Specialists
CHICAGO, Aug. 31, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD, who recently received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation -- the nation's highest honor for technological achievement -- has been elected President of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) for a two-year term from August 2016 through August 2018.
ASRS is the largest retinal organization in the world, representing nearly 3,000 members across the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 59 countries. Retina specialists are board-certified ophthalmologists who have completed fellowship training in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases.

Dr. Humayun is co-director of the University of Southern California (USC) Roski Eye Institute, director of the USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics and is a professor with joint appointments in both USC's Keck School of Medicine and Viterbi School of Engineering. He is the only ophthalmologist ever to be elected as a member of both U.S. National Academies of Medicine and Engineering.
In his more than 25 years of research, Dr. Humayun has secured over 100 patents and co-invented the Argus Series retinal implants, the world's first artificial retinal prostheses, manufactured by Second Sight Medical Products, Inc. The Argus technology which has been in commercial use in Europe since 2011, gained FDA approval in the United States in 2013 and is successfully restoring useful vision to patients who suffer from certain blinding diseases, such as retina pigmentosa.
Over the years, Dr. Humayun has served in numerous ASRS leadership roles including Treasurer, Secretary and Chair of the Program Committee where he worked to develop world-class programming for the ASRS's Annual Scientific Meetings in Vienna and San Francisco.
