WASHINGTON and NEW YORK and LONDON, Sept. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fire suppression systems are the leading application for behind the wall plumbing products. Demand is generated by the large number of fittings -- such as tees, elbows, and supports -- used in the assembly of these systems. Moreover, pipe and fittings used in fire suppression systems tend to be more expensive than those used in distribution and drain, waste and vent (DWV) applications because they are engineered to withstand high operating pressures and rapid flow rates. These and other trends are presented in Behind the Wall Plumbing, a new study from The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

Demand for behind the wall plumbing products in fire suppression system applications is forecast to reach $5.5 billion in 2020. Growth in nonresidential building construction spending will support gains as more buildings are erected. State and local building codes mandate that the vast majority of nonresidential structures be equipped with fire suppression systems during construction.
In many cases, building owners and architects often install fire suppression systems that provide more protection than specified by building codes. Some consumers (such as the owners of warehouses or manufacturing plants) want to minimize property damage in case of fire, while others will wish to ensure the safety of building occupants. These more extensive systems commonly feature additional pipe runs (and the necessary fittings), above-average numbers of sprinkler heads, and sufficient valves to direct fluid flows to areas threatened by fire.
Unlike in distribution and DWV applications, the improvement and repair market accounts for only a minimal share of fire suppression system demand in any given year. Fire suppression systems are nearly always required in new buildings, so there is little opportunity for growth in retrofit installations. Also, due to the durable nature of most fire suppression system components, they tend to last a long time before requiring replacement.
