HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Medbox, Inc. (Pinksheets: MDBX) (www.medboxinc.com) announced that the culmination of the efforts of several key organizations, including Medbox, has resulted in a successful referendum overturning the City of Los Angeles' ban on medical marijuana outlets by submitting more than 50,000 signatures from registered voters to City Hall. The amount of signatures gathered was more than twice the amount needed and sends a clear message that an outright ban will not be tolerated by the citizens of Los Angeles. While Medbox is only an equipment distributer and consultant to many industries, setting forth sensible regulations governing the distribution of medicine is a primary focus for the company as the alternative medicine industry is shaped.
Medbox supports measures to allow a 90-day registration period in Los Angeles where any medical marijuana outlet can legally register with the City after meeting certain criteria. The criteria shall be that the outlet is the proper distance (1000 feet) away from schools, public parks, and playgrounds; can pay a $5000 registration fee to the City; and submit fingerprint samples to the City of Los Angeles for screening to insure that operators are not convicted felons.
"Although the Los Angeles City Council has let its citizens down by not being their true voice and crafting policy that is indicative of what the people truly want and need, the reality is that if the industry as a whole does not band together, it will send a clear message around the nation that medical marijuana supporters are without purpose," said Vincent Mehdizadeh, Founder and CEO of Prescription Vending Machines, Inc., a Subsidiary of Medbox, Inc., "Cities that guarantee safe and regulated access to medical marijuana for patients avoid an unregulated environment that leads to fraud as well as diversion of the drug to non-medical users."
By supporting strict legislation that provides clear-cut regulations in new medical marijuana states, as well as sensible city ordinances in existing medical marijuana states like California, Mehdizadeh hopes that that the rights of patients that genuinely need and benefit from medical marijuana will be preserved and protected.
