Media Advisory: National Journal Policy Summit "Healthy Food, Healthy Planet"
WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, October 26th, National Journal will host "Healthy Food, Healthy Planet" at the Newseum Knight Conference Center in Washington, D.C. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will offer keynote remarks during the discussion.
By the end of this year, it is estimated that the world's population will reach seven billion people, growing to nine billion by 2050. In order to satisfy the world's food needs, production will need to grow 70-100 percent, in the face of environmental changes, a destabilized agri-foods market and continued global economic turmoil. Questions of sustainability, malnutrition, food security and environmental impact are at the forefront of international debates on how we feed a growing planet.
At the summit, National Journal Daily editor Matthew Cooper, a panel of experts will discuss new paradigms for ensuring a future of both healthy food and a healthy planet. The summit will explore what steps are being taken to protect the environment as it relates to food production, how the public and private sectors are working together to lower the impact of food production on the environment, and how the United States can implement policy and legislation that address these issues.
The summit will take place from 8:30am to 10:30am, on the 7th floor of the Newseum Knight Conference Center (555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW). This event is underwritten by The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition.
