Meemic Insurance Company's Guide To Stay Safe This Holiday Season

Dec 22, 2015, 14:24 ET from Meemic Insurance Company

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., MADISON, Wis., and WARRENVILLE, Ill., Dec. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Holidays are filled with travel, parties, baking and presents. While everyone is gathered around the fire exchanging gifts, drinking hot chocolate and singing carols, important weather and home safety tips might be forgotten. This year, Meemic Insurance Company wants to remind everyone to remain safe and be cautious while otherwise occupied entertaining friends and family.

The holidays are meant to be a time spent with loved ones, but it is advisable to remain alert in order to prevent accidents or incidents that might harm your property. Meemic Insurance Company has compiled a list of holiday tips to keep you and your family safe this season:

  • Plan your holiday display – Be sure to plan your lights and other festive decorations according to the number and location of electrical outlets so not to overload them. Carefully inspect all lights and only use lights that have been tested for safety. Taking these precautions could prevent broken or outdated decorations from starting a fire inside or outside of your home.
  • Decorate safely – While putting up displays outside, be sure to avoid power lines and utilize fiberglass or wood ladders when putting up electrical elements, as metal ladders conduct electricity. Secure lights and decorations or fasten electrical wires and extension cords to prevent wind damage or other weather damage to your home.
  • Plan your route – If you plan to travel for the holidays, take a few extra steps to lessen the stress of driving with traffic. Inspect your car for potential hazards, fill up your gas tank, get a good night's rest, plan your route and have items in your car in case of an emergency, especially if the weather will be cold and snowy.
  • Social safety – If you are leaving your home for an extended period of time over the holidays, do not post your travel or party plans on social media. Social media is an increasingly easy way for burglars to know that homes will be unattended. Homes this time of year are more at risk because of brand new presents lying under the tree that might attract a home intruder. Let a neighbor know that you will be gone so someone can watch your house in your absence.
