Memorial Day Flowers Brings Together Thousands Of Volunteers Across The Country To Honor America's Fallen Soldiers
Hundreds of thousands of roses to be placed on graves of soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery & cemeteries in 28 states
WASHINGTON, May 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Volunteers throughout the nation are joining together for the third year this Memorial Day to honor the nation's fallen heroes by placing roses on graves at Arlington National Cemetery and cemeteries in 28 states around the country. Memorial Day Flowers, a charitable organization created by Ramiro Penaherrera, an Ecuadorian-American rose grower, and Kevin Clifford, of the Delaware Valley Floral Group, is leading this touching tribute.
"The supreme sacrifice our military and their families make for us could never be repaid," said Ramiro Penaherrera, Co-founder of Memorial Day Flowers. "On this one day, we want to tell the families of these heroes that the loss of their loved one was not in vain." He added, "We want to honor those who willingly gave their lives for us."
Kevin Clifford, Co-founder of Memorial Day Flowers said, "I feel incredibly privileged to be part of a program honoring our servicemen, women and their families in a small but meaningful way." He added, "We need to bring attention to the lack of recognition of those that have served and raise awareness of some of the challenges they face."
More than 3,300 volunteers from Delaware Valley Floral Group, the primary sponsor of the event, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Boy Scouts of America, local fire and rescue departments, and numerous supporters will gather over the two-day period to distribute 200,000 roses on graves and in fresh flower bouquets, which will be handed to family to take home in remembrance.
"I'm humbly grateful to our nation's veterans for the service they provide to our country and the tremendous sacrifices they've made to secure our freedom," said Bob Moritz, Chairman and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
Moritz added, "I'm also proud of the work our PwC people have done to serve veterans in our communities and to help recruit them into our firm. PwC is honored to join the Memorial Day Flowers organization in placing flowers at Arlington National Cemetery to honor and remember those who have given so much for our nation, including the families who support their service."
In addition to Arlington National Cemetery, more than 180 florists will place roses in 200 cemeteries in 28 states across the country. Flowers from Ecuador, Colombia, Canada and the United States donated the flowers. Transportation, preparation and logistics services are donated by the Delaware Valley Floral Group.
