YORK, S.C., Oct. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 50 York Comprehensive High School students, along with education, government and community leaders, will experience a modern manufacturing plant and learn more about careers in this growing sector of the economy when they visit Meritor's (NYSE: MTOR) York plant on Oct. 4 during Manufacturing Day.
The event coincides with the second annual, nationally celebrated Manufacturing Day. Spearheaded by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Manufacturing Day draws public attention to career opportunities in manufacturing and the nationwide shortage of skilled labor.
"By opening our doors to young people, Meritor hopes to attract the next generation of talent to work in technical careers in our York facilities and other locations across the country," said Tim Burns, vice president, North America, Meritor. "It's important that young people interested in manufacturing prepare in advance with the basic skill sets needed to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven industry where use of sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment is the norm."
Burns and other Meritor leaders will discuss the significance of manufacturing in the United States and Meritor's role as a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking and aftermarket solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets. In South Carolina, Meritor builds brake and axle components for manufacturers of on-highway and military vehicles at its York and Manning plants.
York plant specialists in the areas of engineering, procurement, logistics, finance, production, technical operations and human resources will offer advice on preparing for a career in manufacturing and answer students' questions before taking them on a tour of the facility.
According to NAM, more than 17 million Americans work in manufacturing jobs, and more than 600,000 jobs are unfilled because applicants are not adequately trained for technical jobs that often involve automation, robotics and screen technology.
"It's critical that we develop new generations of skilled workers who can keep pace with leading-edge technologies that will keep us competitive in South Carolina and across the country," said Scott Walters, site manager, Meritor's York plant.
In South Carolina, Meritor has long supported development of future generations of manufacturing employees by offering grants to local public and technical colleges and universities. In addition, the company this year spearheaded a Manufacturing Operations Certificate Program for York Comprehensive High School students that will prepare them for manufacturing careers.
"It's a low-cost, grassroots, community-oriented initiative that provides a path of upward mobility primarily for students who don't go to college," said Tom Drumwright, regional Human Resources manager, York and Manning facilities. "There are many manufacturing careers for young people in our area, and we want to help make opportunities available to them before they graduate by incorporating this program into the school district's curriculum."
Additional speakers include Dr. Greg Rutherford, president, York Technical College and Dr. Vernon Prosser, superintendent, York School District.
