The new center, deployed within forty-five days, upgrades an outdated, analog solution with a net-centric, software-based visualization and collaboration solution that no longer requires the center to rely on proprietary hardware and a fixed-wire solution. Modeled after an Activu solution deployed for Montgomery County, the TRIP Center, which functions as the traffic management and emergency weather response system for Prince George's County, quickly collaborated with Activu to develop and install a new solution. In order to continue their service levels and not risk compromising their operations, the County required the video wall solution to be in place before the snow season. Delaying the new system would put them in jeopardy of slipping their project timeline to spring 2010, requiring the County to rely on a system that was already failing. With a dedicated team of engineers and support staff, Activu designed, developed, and installed the visualization and collaboration solution in less than 35 days.
With access to view up to 20 simultaneous cameras, Prince George's County has increased visibility into their road conditions, allowing them to improve traffic response time and overall traffic management. The new system has also improved signal coordination in the county as well, allowing traffic management staff to be able to visually monitor multiple intersections to coordinate traffic and timing. In this manner, they optimize traffic signals more efficiently by being able to see multiple intersections with multiple approaches to those intersections. "The workmanship, customer support, and project management that took place to make this happen in a short amount of time, less than 35 days after the purchase orders were signed, was amazing," said Ed Jones, Chief of Traffic Operations, TRIP Center.
