MI Citizens Launch Statewide Ad Campaign Supporting Democracy and Repealing Emergency Managers' Law
Move is a prelude to the Stand Up for Democracy statewide ballot initiative restoring democracy and representative government at the local level and opposing emergency manager powers
DETROIT, June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michigan citizens from Detroit, Benton Harbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Marquette are launching the Stand Up for Democracy statewide advertising campaign. The purpose of the ad campaign is to raise awareness and support for a ballot initiative repealing Public Act 4. PA 4 is the new law giving emergency managers sweeping powers including:
- Seizing and sell a public school or city's assets
- eliminating collective bargaining rights for up to 5 years
- dismissing elected officials and local legislatures
- dissolving whole cities, counties and school districts
Three commercials will rotate on popular radio stations in media markets in the lower and Upper Peninsula throughout the week. The 60 second ads are titled Stand Up for Democracy History, Stand Up for Democracy Now and Get Up, Stand Up for Democracy.
Stand Up for Democracy History focuses on how Americans have overcome threats to democracy from 1776 to today. It notes that, "Now the greatest threat to democracy in Michigan does not come at the end of a gun barrel but at the point of a pen."
Stand Up for Democracy Now takes aim at "Lansing corporate politicians" who rob from the poor to give to the rich corporations.
Get Up, Stand Up for Democracy is an up tempo ad said in rapid fire staccato prose to Bob Marley's legendary reggae song of the same name. "We have come a long way to enjoy the freedoms we have today. Civil rights, equal rights, women's rights and labor rights are all things we have fought for that make our state and our country great. We have the right to go where we want, elect who we want and say what we want. We have the right to govern ourselves and determine our own destiny. Now some of those rights have been taken away from us."
The commercials are paid for by the Committee to Stand Up for Democracy. On Saturday, June 18th thousands of volunteers will gather in Detroit, Benton Harbor, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Marquette to launch a petition drive repealing the EMF law.
