WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- LeadingAge HackFest is pleased to announce that Microsoft Research is joining the project as a corporate donor.
The HackFest is a 2-day event, co-sponsored by Ziegler and LeadingAge, that challenges participants to "Engage with Age" by creating a technology-driven tool aimed at improving the lives of older adults and their families.
Along with a monetary donation, Microsoft is providing resources from its Lab of Things, a flexible platform for experimental research that uses connected devices in homes and other settings.
The Lab of Things offers a wide range of sensors and drivers for a variety of tools, including IP cameras, the Kinect sensor bar, ZWave devices, and more.
"The LeadingAge HackFest and Microsoft Research align over one simple, yet very important, goal: improving lives through technology," said Arjmand Samuel, senior research program manager, Computer Science, Microsoft Research. "We are happy to support the event and we are quite excited to see what participants create for older adults, their caregivers, and the organizations that provide supportive services."
HackFest teams have 1 full day to design and build their tools, which can be apps, websites, devices, etc. The tools don't need to be fully developed, but the final presentations to judges must include a plan for how the project could be implemented.
The LeadingAge HackFest takes place Oct. 25-27 in Dallas, TX, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. First prize is $5,000.
