Military Medical Experts to Offer Update on Push For Early Diagnosis of Combat Brain Injuries
Master Class at Battlefield Health Conference in Washington, D.C.
PITTSBURGH, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- As the U.S. military urgently seeks new and more accurate tests to detect mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) -- a potentially life-long disability afflicting an estimated 20 percent of U.S. soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq -- leading military medical researchers will present a detailed update on efforts to improve early diagnosis, monitoring and treatment during the upcoming Battlefield Healthcare conference (www.battlefieldhealthcare.com) in Washington, D.C.
Neuro Kinetics, Inc. (www.neuro-kinetics.com), manufacturers of noninvasive vestibular and neurologic testing equipment used worldwide, is sponsoring a two-hour master class at the conference on March 31st.
Military medical researchers currently are investigating whether oculometric measurements included in the battery of tests included in Neuro Kinetics' I-Portal® NOTC (Neuro-Otologic Test Center) and I-Portal® VNG (Video Nystagmography) systems can provide effective neuro-physiologic and vestibular evaluations for mTBI. If so, earlier diagnosis of mTBI -- and therefore improved care -- would be possible.
"We are encouraged by the findings of the military's research and are eager to educate the broader military healthcare community," said J. Howison Schroeder, Neuro Kinetics chief executive officer and president.
Military medical experts scheduled to participate in the Battlefield Health master class include:
- Dr Holly Burrows, Traumatic Brain Injury Team, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
- Captain Karen Lambert – Officer in Charge, Traumatic Brain Injury Team, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
- Dr Robin Pinto – Traumatic Brain Injury Team, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
- Dr. David Twillie, Director of Research & Program Development, Warrior Resiliency and Recovery Center, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Fort Campbell, KY
Neuro Kinetics currently is assisting in a comprehensive research project, funded by the T.R.U.E. Research Foundation (www.trueresearch.org), in conjunction with the USAARL and other military medical facilities, that seeks to establish a mTBI testing protocol for the military.
A number of U.S. military hospitals have installed the I-Portal system improving diagnosis and monitoring of returning brain-injured military personnel. Other federal government medical facilities, including those operated by the Veterans Administration and the National Institutes of Health, also rely on Neuro Kinetics equipment to conduct daily clinical evaluations of patients as well as to undertake a range of research projects.
