COLUMBIA, Mo. and TAMPA, Fla., June 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Missouri Care, Inc., a subsidiary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), announced a $5,000 grant to Rainbow House in Columbia, Missouri, to support the not-for-profits' mission of providing a safe haven for children in crisis.
Rainbow House Children's Emergency Shelter can house up to 14 children at a time and serves children from birth through 18 years old, allowing siblings to stay together. Set up like a regular home with bedrooms, a playroom and kitchen, the shelter serves children who come from families that are in crisis. It is available for a child who needs to be removed from their current living situation for safety and families under intense stress with little or no support. Children may stay at Rainbow House until foster care is arranged or, in the case of family stress, after the staff assists parents to become whole and healthy.
Missouri Care's grant is supporting health, advocacy and educational services for children enrolled in the emergency shelter program to help them flourish. The shelter provides home-cooked meals, recreational outings and activities to create a feeling of stability for each child at the shelter.
"In 2014, more than 68,000 cases of child abuse and neglect were investigated by Missouri's Child Protection Services," said Lou Gianquinto, Missouri Care president. "Missouri Care is committed to working with organizations like Rainbow House to help ensure the services and supports families need to get and stay healthy are available to them."
"Rainbow House is incredibly grateful to receive this grant from Missouri Care," said Kelsey Louder, administrative director for the Rainbow House Emergency Shelter. "The kids who stay with us deserve the freedom and space to be kids. These funds enable Rainbow House to continue to provide services and to create a safe space for children in mid-Missouri."
