Missouri Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results in Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales & Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Feb. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Missouri during 2011. Data released by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Show-Me State blocked the sale of more than 49,000 boxes of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) from being sold keeping a total of more than 121,000 grams off the street.
"Real-time, stop-sale technology is a critical tool in the fight against methamphetamine production and use, and according to the 2011 data, it is extremely effective. Not only does NPLEx block unlawful pseudoephedrine sales right at the counter, it also ensures that law-abiding Missourians are not hindered from accessing the safe and reliable medicines they depend on to treat common cold and seasonal allergy symptoms," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "The prevention of more than 121,000 grams in illegal PSE sales, provides ample proof that NPLEx is keeping pseudoephedrine out of the hands of criminals. Members of the Missouri Legislature are to be commended for having passed responsible legislation that has proven successful in targeting criminals, not law-abiding Missourians."
