Mobile Future Unveils Video Exploring Consumer Impact from Looming Spectrum Shortage
Highlights need for additional spectrum to help the mobile ecosystem thrive
WASHINGTON, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mobile Future today released an original, two-minute animated video, "Spectrum: Fueling the Mobile Future," to explore the long term impact of the staggering growth in consumer and corporate mobile usage in the United States on American spectrum resources.
The video highlights the nation's extraordinary appetite for wireless products, data, and services across a dizzying array of applications and devices. The massive growth of internet mobility, however, is quickly exceeding the available wireless spectrum, the invisible infrastructure that powers the mobile ecosystem. The video outlines the serious impacts sharply increasing data consumption will have on networks if additional wireless spectrum is not made available soon.
"Today's vibrant mobile ecosystem connects devices and services that weren't imagined just a few short years ago," explained Jonathan Spalter, Chairman of Mobile Future. "With rapidly growing consumer adoption and increasing reliance on wireless services, products and devices it's critical for not only policymakers, but also the private sector, to ensure our economy has the spectrum resources needed to meet evolving consumer demands."
Spectrum: Fueling the Mobile Future can be viewed here:
- By 2012, more than half of all new phones purchased will be smartphones.
- A smartphone uses 24x more spectrum than a feature phone. An iPad uses 120x more.
- By 2014, 70% of all consumer electronics will be wirelessly connected to the Internet.
- If we don't allocate more spectrum for mobile, our nation's appetite for wireless will out-strip capacity as early as 2014.
