Mobis Transportation/Bikestation Named One of America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs
LONG BEACH, Calif., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobis Transportation/Bikestation, the nation's only turnkey bicycle and alternative transportation transit network, today announced that the company has been named one of the 25 Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs in Bloomberg Businessweek's second annual U.S. roundup of sustainable businesses that create social or environmental value alongside profit. As such, Mobis is also a finalist in the search for the top five social entrepreneurs, an award to be determined by public vote and to be announced on June 29 on the Small Business channel.
Mobis/Bikestation was selected from over 200 nominees representing all areas of social entrepreneurship. The company was cited for getting more people to use alternative transportation, helping reduce driving and its environmental impacts, and making it easier for people to get around without cars. Mobis, a for-profit company with a non-profit educational arm, designs, builds and manages bike and alternative transportation transit centers providing secure, electronic bicycle parking, and amenities such as lockers, showers, bicycle repair and retail. Working with local governments, transit authorities, educational institutions and developers, Mobis has already helped develop 14 Bikestations in the U.S. and expects to install 200 more within 5 years.
According to Andrea White-Kjoss, CEO of Mobis Transportation/Bikestation, "Bicycles are one of the most under-utilized resources in the U.S. There are more bikes than households, but due to fears of theft and inconvenience people leave them in the garage except for recreation. Bikestations overcome these objections and get the bikes out of the garage for transportation, allowing people to cycle the first and last mile to and from public transit. Bikestations help make public transportation work, reducing the need for car parking and getting automobiles off the road."
