ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott Nash, MOM's Organic Market CEO/Founder, came across a Washington Post article that inspired MOM's to take action to increase transparency and bolster sustainability within the pet food industry. MOM's has partnered with the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition (PISC) to develop a survey for existing and potential vendors.
Questions include:
- Do you utilize leftover animal products from the human food system?
- Is your seafood certified sustainable by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch or similar?
- Is your packaging recyclable, recycled, compostable, and/or responsibly sourced?
Pet food was once considered inherently sustainable due to its use of leftover ingredients from the human food supply chain. When questions arose regarding ingredient quality of pet products, a surge of brands boasting prime cuts of protein surfaced to meet demand and quell consumer worries. But what kind of environmental impact do these "high-quality" pet products have?
With more than half of all American households sharing a home with at least one cat or dog, sales of pet food are on the rise. The industry purchases over 16.5 billion pounds of meat, poultry, seafood and grains to produce food products just for cats and dogs. As the demand for high-quality pet food grows, so does the confusion about the environmental significance of the industry.
As survey results come in, MOM's and PISC will develop a working group of retailers, consumers, and pet food suppliers to fine-tune the survey for use across the pet food industry.
Lisa de Lima, MOM's VP of Grocery says, "Our goal is to source brands and products that hold an optimum balance between nutrition and sustainability. We want to give our customers peace of mind, knowing they've made the best choice for their pets and the environment."
