FAIRMONT, W.Va., March 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mon Power, a FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) utility, has launched an aggressive effort to assess damage and restore service in northern Mon Power territory after heavy, wet snow fell overnight and this morning, causing trees and limbs to fall, damaging power lines. As many as 54,000 customers were without service during the storm, and about 16,000 have already been restored to service. Approximately 38,000 remain without service at 11 a.m.
Many roads remain impassable, and the snow continues to fall, with up to 4 more inches expected throughout the day. Poor road conditions, coupled with the ongoing snowfall, are hampering crews' efforts to access areas with damage to make repairs.
Mon Power has mobilized crews from other FirstEnergy utilities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland to assist with the restoration effort, with crews expected to arrive this afternoon and evening.
Temperatures are expected to drop, which could pose additional challenges tonight and tomorrow morning.
Given the extent of the damage, the company expects this to be a multi-day restoration effort in many areas.
Customers who are without power are encouraged to call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage or click the "Report Outage" link on www.firstenergycorp.com. Customers should immediately report downed wires to their utility or their local police or fire department. Customers should never go near a downed power line, even if they think it is no longer carrying electricity. Extra caution should be exercised in areas where downed wires may be tangled in downed tree branches or other debris.
