R2 certification is a voluntary standard in the e-waste recycling industry for the responsible recycling of electronics. It outlines the framework for the creation and implementation of an environmental management system (EMS), but also includes responsibility to worker health and safety, as well as true end-of-life tracking for materials to their final destinations in the recycling chain.
"It is a great pleasure to further validate the credibility of our environmental, quality, health and safety management system and the processes we have developed," says Theresa Bauer, Director of Compliance, EHSS, MPC. "The accomplishment of certification for ISO 14001, 9001 and R2 at our new Philadelphia location makes us confident in our mitigation of data security, environmental, health and safety risks."
During the R2 certification process, electronics recyclers undergo third party auditing to ensure they are implementing these high quality standards within their organization. The audits are conducted by the certification body SGS, the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company.
MPC views the voluntary auditing and standards certifications as the foundation on which its industry leading status is built. The company was one of the first electronics recyclers to seek and attain both ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) certifications, both of which require third party audit verification. 2011 will serve as a banner year for MPC's east coast operations as it follows the corporate certification standards.
"In an industry that is changing and defining itself daily, it is important to meet and exceed any environmental certification or standard set forth," says Todd Schachtman, Chief Business Development Officer, MPC. "As a national industry leader, our commitment to these standards provides our clients and business partners with complete transparency with the most responsible and secure asset disposition and recycling processes possible."
