MRSI Releases White Paper: Streamlined Life Cycle Assessment: A Value Proposition for the Department of Defense
WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Mission Ready Sustainability Initiative (MRSI) released a new White Paper "Streamlined Life Cycle Assessment: A Value Proposition for the Department of Defense." This new White Paper was developed by MRSI's Streamlined Life Cycle Assessment Work Group.
"This MRSI White Paper addresses opportunities for managers in the public sector, such as the Department of Defense (DoD) and the individual services, and the private sector to understand better the total cost of ownership of both products and processes and how that better understanding can become a positive economic discriminator for program selections in the acquisition process," said Maribeth Malloy, Director of Environmental Sustainability and External Engagement, Lockheed Martin, Co-Chair of the MRSI Work Group."
Malloy continued, "The Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Installations & Environment) has already reached out to industry to address ways to provide consistent, practical and repeatable methodology to drive prudent acquisition decisions."
Bill Flanagan, Director, Ecoassessment Center of Excellence, General Electric Company, Co-Chair of the MRSI Work Group added, "The General Electric Company (GE) has a business strategy to create new value for our customers, investors and society by solving energy, efficiency and water challenges." Flanagan continued, "GE Aviation is applying the LCA/LCC methodology to assess the additive manufacturing of fuel nozzles for the CFM LEAP next-generation high-bypass turbofan jet engine." "Additive manufacturing processes (also commonly referred to as 3D printing) offer the potential for novel fuel nozzle designs that result in reduced life cycle environmental impact and total cost of ownership due to: reduced part weight, net lower raw material consumption; and enhanced performance," Flanagan concluded.
The MRSI White Paper includes business case studies from MRSI members including 3M, BASF, General Electric Company and Lockheed Martin.
"This White Paper provides business cases on how four leading companies are moving forward with their own SLCA activities and highlights the opportunity to expand SLCA pilot activities within DoD," said Steve Hellem, MRSI's Executive Director. "MRSI is committed to programs and activities that ensure our soldiers are always mission ready while simultaneously are environmentally and economically sustainable," Hellem concluded.
