Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center Dramatically Expands Hispanic Outreach
PHOENIX, Oct. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix is dramatically expanding its Hispanic outreach with seminars that will be available throughout the United States. Presented online and completely in Spanish, these seminars will also be offered to groups in Mexico and Colombia.
"This is an incredible step for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center," says Claudia Martinez, program coordinator for the Ali center's Hispanic Outreach Program. "We are thrilled to be able to deliver Parkinson's education to Hispanics well beyond Arizona."
The course, called Parkinson 202, is an extension of the Ali center's first online education course. Held in April, Parkinson 101 brought together more than 250 participants from the United States, Mexico and Columbia.
With emphasis on maintaining a positive quality of life, Parkinson 202 has been designed by experts at the Ali center to help people living with Parkinson's and their family members better understand the disease's non-motor related symptoms.
"The seminars are unique because our understanding and sensitivity of the Hispanic culture allows us to provide a community environment that encourages active participation and learning," adds Martinez.
The educational seminars are free and will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) on October 18, November 1 and 22. Anyone can watch online by visiting http://ow.ly/p8SKx and clicking "Seminario Educativo Parkinson." If watching live, viewers are able to participate by answering polls and asking questions via email.
In Arizona, the Hispanic Outreach Program at the Ali center also offers a monthly support group, a yearly group picnic, various exercise and expressive art classes, workshops for caregivers, a choir called Voces Unidas, and the first of its kind Promotores Program for Hispanics with Parkinson's.
Members of the public who do not have internet access or would like more information should contact Claudia Martinez at 602-406-2453.
