'MY VOTE, MY VOICE': Florida NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. Announce Statewide Voter Registration Rally and Block Party
MIAMI, Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi announced a statewide rally and block party to register, and educate, underserved voters for the 2012 election. "My Vote, My Voice" is designed to battle unprecedented attacks on voter's rights imposed by new restrictions passed by the Florida Legislature over the past three years, disenfranchising minority, young and elderly voters.
"Florida has blatantly attacked the voting rights of millions of its residents," Florida NAACP President Adora Obi Nweze said. "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called voting the 'foundation stone for political action.' We have seen that foundation weakened due to voter suppression and intimidation tactics. The NAACP believes that everyone with the right to vote in (Florida) should have the ability to exercise that right."
"We are committed to the communities where we live and work. As mentors, role models, and community leaders, we must protect the rights of minority voters, and make sure that all of our voices are heard," said Linnes Finney, Esq., Southern Province Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.
The NAACP, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and other organizations have initiated "MY VOTE, MY VOICE," a Statewide Voter Registration Rally. On Saturday, September 29, 2012, in most major Cities throughout Florida, community block parties will be held to register voters from underserved communities. "We will have food, fun and entertainment for all. Miami, Broward, Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona, Tallahassee, Sarasota, and others are targeted areas for registering voters," according to Treska Rodgers and Ebony Jackson, NAACP Coordinators. "US Citizens over the age of 18 must show their voter's registration card or be registered onsite before joining the party." Members of Kappa Alpha Psi and other organizations will also be volunteering to take voters to the polls.
William Johnson, Polemarch of the Miami Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, stated, "We are proud to stand as one with the NAACP, businesses, and political leaders throughout Florida. Today we speak to those who seek to restrict our ability to vote, saying This is OUR VOTE, now listen to OUR VOICE ... Election Day is coming."
