National League of Cities Offers Proposals to Reduce Gun Violence
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National League of Cities President Marie Lopez Rogers , mayor of Avondale, AZ, releases the following statement in response to President Obama's call for new efforts to reduce gun violence:
"As clearly stated in our public safety policy on weapons and ammunition control, the National League of Cities stands behind President Obama's call for federal action to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our great country every single day.
"We are glad the country is having this much needed dialogue. And as an organization that represents urban, suburban and rural communities who are dealing with this issue, NLC fully supports and hopes to play an active role in the effort that Vice President Biden will lead to come up with a list of concrete proposals to reduce gun violence. At the top of the list, we call upon Congress and the Administration to reinstate the ban on assault weapons and to require background checks before all gun purchases.
"Now, more than ever, is a critical time to rethink public safety in our country. In the coming weeks we look forward to engaging with our colleagues in Congress and the Administration about this important issue, and continuing our efforts to ensure the nation's cities and towns are safe places to live and work."
