The study suggests that many employees are taking learning into their own hands when not provided with educational resources in their workplace. Increasingly, a majority of employees (currently 80 percent) are turning to their mobile devices to continue their self-directed education.
Additional findings from the study include:
- People felt that college prepared them an average of 68 percent for their careers.
- Ninety percent of people agreed that changes in their professional fields required them to update their knowledge and develop new professional skills.
- Workplace learning helped respondents feel an average of 72 percent prepared for future job positions.
The study found that employees appreciate an employer's regard for in-office education. In companies where employee learning was clearly valued, 80 percent of respondents were satisfied with their companies' training methods, significantly more than the 64 percent of employees in companies that were not recognized as openly valuing learning—a significant 16 percent increase.
"These findings support the idea that successful companies today need to invest in continuous learning opportunities for employees, both to increase their capabilities and agility and to engage and satisfy employees," Stein said.
This online survey was conducted by polling roughly 500 college-educated workers throughout the United States in the fall of 2015. The survey was distributed via Qualtrics. For more information on this study, check out the white paper at https://www.getbridge.com/preparing-workforce.
