The National Unity and Social Coexistence Conference will address the challenges of the religious diversity as well as review the significant changes taking place in the Arab world. Whilst providing recommendations aimed at strengthening national unity, the conference also aims to encourage an open, scholarly dialogue on religious and ethnic pluralism and enhanced coexistence; building bridges amongst all groups and communities in the Arab world.
By bringing together leaders such as Dr. Rashad Hussein, US Special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and Sheikh Rachid Al-Ghannouchi, Assistant Secretary-General of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, as well as George Sabra, Abdulbaset Sieda, Ahmad Mouath Al-Khatib Al-Hasani - all prominent members of the Syrian opposition, the National Unity and Social Coexistence Conference, Doha - Qatar will confront manifestations of sectarian tension which might be based on flawed readings of doctrinal heritage, often motivated by political expediency.
In his conference letter George Sabra, former acting president of the Syrian National Coalition, stated: "In the spirit of justice, tolerance and reconciliation, things could be brought back to normal - spreading the spirit of harmony among the people, and ensuring civil peace and reinvigorating national unity within the Syrian society. This requires uncovering the facts without fear, admitting to mistakes without cover-up, and developing a communal moral and civic spirit amongst all."
The Arabs have traditionally adopted a variety of means to manage their differences, creating tolerant environments of pluralistic coexistence. This was reflected in their well-developed political, economic and legal systems throughout history, securing peace, prosperity, national unity and cohesion, and fostering peaceful interactions with neighbouring states. In this spirit, the National Unity and Social Coexistence Conference aims to revisit that history, to help re-ignite tolerance and pluralism in today's Arab societies.
The conference will be livetweeted in Arabic and English with the hashtag #NUCQatar.
