BRENTWOOD, Tenn., Aug. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As a leader in the senior living industry, Brookdale has an opportunity to make a difference through its sustainability efforts. For the second year, Brookdale has released an annual summary of progress in making a positive impact on people, places and performance; the 2017 Sustainability Report covers the senior living communities owned and/or operated by the company.
"The publishing of our second report reaffirms our ongoing commitment and continued progress in making sustainability an everyday priority," said Marla Thalheimer, Brookdale's director of Sustainability. "This commitment is crucial to our success as a company, and has a direct impact on the people who live and work in our communities. We want to lead by example by creating a more sustainable world for them to live and work in."
The sustainability roadmap described in the report encompasses three focus areas with nine key priorities:
- People: Engaging residents and their families, company associates and suppliers.
- Places: Reducing environment impacts.
- Performance: Creating value through continuous improvement.
Highlights of the 2017 sustainability report include details on Brookdale's energy usage savings. Projects included the installation of over 48,000 occupancy sensors to automatically turn off lights in common areas and 21 communities becoming ENERGY STAR certified. All of this resulted in more than 19 million kilowatt hours being reduced. Other highlights focus on water use reduction, including installation of high efficiency water fixtures that save more than 2 million gallons of water annually.
The report outlines the environmental impact of the company, which has more than 90 million square feet of building space across more than 1,000 communities in 46 states. The company has improved measurement capabilities, defined baseline performance and set goals for reducing energy use by 15 percent by 2019 along with cutting water consumption and waste. Suppliers have been engaged to procure superior products, improve processes related to product use and assist in managing waste and recycling.
