NAV CANADA to Deploy Saab Sensis Wide Area Multilateration in Springbank

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- NAV CANADA, the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) for Canada, is deploying Saab Sensis' Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) technology at Springbank, Alberta. The WAM system will enhance the safety of flight around Springbank Airport by providing NAV CANADA air traffic controllers with additional surveillance coverage not available with the existing radar.

The WAM system will provide additional coverage from 100 feet to 1,000 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) around the airport, providing surveillance data to a NAV CANADA radar data processor.

"Saab Sensis WAM has proven to deliver highly accurate, tailorable surveillance in locations where radar has limitations due to terrain and other obstacles," said Kim Troutman, NAV CANADA Vice President, Engineering. "For Springbank, WAM is a cost-effective method of providing Controllers with additional surveillance coverage which will improve safety and efficiency for aircraft using this airport."

Multilateration uses multiple low-maintenance, non-rotating sensors to triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals, providing air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position and identification information regardless of weather conditions. With a higher update rate and greater positional accuracy than traditional radar, multilateration delivers effective surveillance for increased safety, capacity and efficiency of airspace and surface operations.

By employing advanced processing techniques, a Saab Sensis multilateration system uses the minimal number of sensors for a less complex, lower lifecycle cost solution. Additionally, each multilateration sensor supports Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B), providing an infrastructure that is ready for today's surveillance needs and tomorrow's avionics.

"Springbank will become the fourth location in Canada to enhance flight safety by utilizing Saab Sensis WAM to address challenging surveillance coverage demands not easily achieved with traditional radar," said Ken Kaminski, vice president and general manager of Saab Sensis. "WAM's extensible nature means that the Springbank system can easily be expanded from terminal area surveillance into a wide area network for en route coverage."

Almost 100 sites worldwide have chosen Saab Sensis multilateration to enhance safety, efficiency, capacity and cost savings through airport surface surveillance, wide area surveillance and airport surface management. Saab Sensis solutions for NAV CANADA includes WAM systems at Fort St. John, Kelowna and Vancouver Harbor, ADS-B deployed across Hudson Bay and surface multilateration at Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
