Nebraska Manufacturing Jobs Increased 1.4% Over Past Year
EVANSTON, Ill., Sept. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Nebraska increased 1.4% over the past twelve months, according to the 2013 Nebraska Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Nebraska gained 1,696 industrial jobs between July 2011 and July 2012.
Manufacturers' News reports Nebraska is now home to 2,849 manufacturers employing 121,774 workers.
"Nebraska continues to see its manufacturing sector improve," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's business-friendly environment and abundant natural resources have been a draw for a variety of enterprises."
Bright spots for the state included the opening of Novoenzyme's enzyme production plant in Blair; the expansion of a Merck & Co. animal vaccine production plant in Elkhorn; Tyson Foods' plans to expand a meat-processing facility in Dakota City; and the recent opening of Orthman Manufacturing's new industrial equipment plant in Lexington.
MNI reports Nebraska's largest industrial sectors by employment all gained jobs over the year. Food products manufacturing remains the state's top sector by industrial employment with 37,680 jobs, up 1.5% over the year. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks second with 12,547 jobs, up 2.2%, while third-ranked printing/publishing accounts for 9,818 jobs, up 3.9% over the past twelve months.
Other sectors seeing increases included lumber/wood, up 6.9%; primary metals, up 6%; electronics, up 2.8%; and chemicals, up 1.4%. Losses were seen in stone/clay/glass, down 4.7%, and fabricated metals, down 3.7%, while employment in all other sectors remained stable.
Manufacturers' News reports Southeast Nebraska accounts for the largest share of the state's industrial employment with 85,040 jobs, up 1.4% over the year. Northeast Nebraska accounts for 26,267 industrial jobs, up 1%, while Southwest Nebraska accounts for 7,688, up 3.3% from a year ago. Northwest Nebraska accounts for 2,779 industrial jobs, with no significant change reported.
MNI's city data shows Omaha is Nebraska's top city for manufacturing employment, home to 34,323 jobs, with the city posting a gain of 2.6% over the year. Second-ranked Lincoln accounts for 17,518 jobs, down a half percent over the year. Grand Island is currently home to 8,053 industrial jobs, down a half percent, following the closure of railroad tie manufacturer CXT, Inc. Fourth-ranked Columbus accounts for 5,058 industrial jobs, with no significant change reported, while Dakota City accounts for 3,670, virtually unchanged from a year ago.
