Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Launches Summer Programming across the Nation and in Mexico plus Online Resources to Help Teens Beat the Job Drought

NEW YORK, May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As the school year winds down and graduation season peaks, teens are on the hunt for jobs. However with the national teen unemployment rate at a staggering 24.2 percent, the outlook for youth summer employment is grim.  The global non-profit, Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) believes that by engaging and teaching entrepreneurship, young people can beat the crippling statistics through job creation, innovation and bridging the skills gap by developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

Over the course of the summer, NFTE will host programs across the nation and Mexico that will reach almost 500 young people to help address this issue and to empower teens to think and act like entrepreneurs.  Countless more will access NFTE's free online resource and be able to turn their hobby or interest into a much needed summer job.

"It's the goal of NFTE to empower all young people to develop the entrepreneurial mindset - the attitudes, habits and skills needed to face the new global economy, personally and professionally," said Amy Rosen, President and CEO of Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. "NFTE's summer programs and online resources are vital to expanding our ability to provide entrepreneurship education to as many young people as possible so they can become job creators in a sustainable global economy."

Following is a list of the available tools and programs NFTE will provide this summer to help teens combat the job drought and to inspire them to create a successful future:

NFTE MakeYourJob.org is an online resource to help young people create their own jobs when they are facing such a restricted summer job market.  MakeYourJob.org was available last summer but today will be added to on Microsoft's YouthSpark Hub which provides access to a multitude of resources to empower youth to change their world.

NFTE BizCamp® - provides young people with all the knowledge and skills needed to develop a business plan for an idea of their own.  Through the program, students develop an entrepreneurial mindset that will help them create opportunities for themselves for years to come in the increasing competitive global marketplace. Camps will operate in Baltimore, Westchester County, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Mexico City this summer.  Camp sponsors include MasterCard Worldwide, State Street and Fidelity.

NFTE Biz Accelerator Programs are designed for students who have completed the NFTE curriculum during the school year and to help them strengthen their entrepreneurial ventures with the support of business volunteers who focus often on business development, financial advice, marketing and technology/infrastructure.  This summer NFTE offices in New York City, the Bay Area and Miami are hosting accelerator programs with the support of Ernst & Young, Microsoft, State Street and SAP.

For the second year in a row, NFTE's New York City program team and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) are hosting NYC Generation Tech.  In this intensive tech-entrepreneurship "bootcamp", students will learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship; develop basic coding knowledge and form teams to develop a mobile app and business plan.  Both Microsoft and MasterCard Worldwide are supporting this unique and high impact program.

New this summer and in partnership with Care.com, Girl Empower: The NFTE BizCamp® Experience is designed to teach young women about personal discovery, leadership, entrepreneurship and teamwork.  This year is a pilot program that is being hosted by Babson College.

All NFTE programs reinforce students' critical thinking skills and provide them with tools to help them develop an entrepreneurial mindset. NFTE is the only global non-profit organization solely focused on bringing entrepreneurship education to low-income youth and impacts the lives of nearly 50,000 young people annually.
