GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Fire Your Congressman Political Action Committee officially launched with a simple mission -- to kick incumbent Members of Congress to the curb. The nonpartisan campaign organization allows Americans to legally make donations against any Member of Congress -- with limited or no public disclosure.
"Congress's approval ratings have never been lower, and the institution clearly would benefit from new blood," said Norbert Richter, the founder of Fire Your Congressman. "Our new grassroots organization empowers small-dollar donors to hold any representative of their choosing, Republican or Democrat, accountable."
When donors contribute to Fire Your Congressman, they'll select a Member of Congress they'd like their money to oppose. The PAC will use that money to contribute to that lawmaker's challenger, or for independent advertising and research campaigns against the incumbent, depending on which approach it determines will be more effective.
Fire Your Congressman PAC isn't required to disclose the names of individuals who donate $200 a year or less. Contributions above $200 will be reported only as donations to Fire Your Congressman -- not donations for or against a particular incumbent congressman.
Fire Your Congressman also allows donors to contribute against a sitting Member of Congress before a challenger has come forward. That may enable more "regular people" to run for office; they'll be able to count on funds from the PAC to aid them in their race.
Fire Your Congressman is a grassroots solution to a national problem. In the 2018 election cycle, the average incumbent senator's campaign has raised 14 times as much as the average challenger. That funding gap makes it hard for Americans who aren't independently wealthy to unseat incumbents.
Fire Your Congressman has been raising funds from ordinary Americans since January. The PAC hopes to have an impact on dozens of congressional races this election cycle and beyond.
"We're putting democracy back in the hands of the American people," Richter said. "Millions of Americans want to throw the bums out of Congress. We're giving them a tool to do so."
