Following Project-Based Learning techniques and using Lean and Agile principles, students are taught to work collaboratively as they wear different hats - designer, business developer, programmer, product manager - to solve real-world problems. The program culminates in a weekend hackathon, where students work in teams to create a Pebble smartwatch app and present to their peers, family, and the community.
Nick Hahn, founder and League Director of Austin Spark League, says, "I learned that getting a well-paid job alone wasn't enough because I was often uninspired and bored. I needed to do something I love, which naturally became something I was easily good at, and people were happy to pay me for it because of my passion and proficiency. That's the sweet spot - the Spark in Austin Spark League - that we hope to help our students discover on their journey."
According to the report from personal finance website Nerdwallet.com, Austin is among the top cities for young entrepreneurs, especially those involved in tech startups. The reasons attributed to its 7th-place ranking include a low cost of living, a growing and well-educated population, as well as the availability of many local resources, such as Austin Spark League, that support budding entrepreneurs.
David Hawks, CEO of Austin-based Agile Velocity and advisor to Austin Spark League, says, "Austin is a high-tech city with a vibrant startup scene, which makes Austin Spark League, with its immersive, experiential learning program that taps into the entrepreneurial community, a perfect springboard for students who already have the next big idea brewing in their heads."
Austin Spark League's first session begins on July 6, 2015. Enrollment for the summer has begun, and applicants are encouraged to apply soon as space is limited. To learn more about the program or to apply, visit www.AustinSparkLeague.com.
