Topping the list of most common client device issues, Wi-Fi accounted for more than 64% of users problems while RADIUS authentication glitches accounted for 13% and DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol), responsible for giving users IP addresses, caused users connectivity problems 12% of the time. Other common client devices issues included DNS issues (4%) and ARP (address resolution protocol) irregularities (7%).
Among mobile devices, Apple iOS failed to connect using DHCP more than normal while Android clients experienced the greatest number of connectivity incidents due to unpredictable bouncing between different SSIDs.

The results are based on the correlation of three months worth of raw wired and wireless network data examined within Nyansa's Voyance analytics cloud service following its launch in April. Since that time, Voyance has analyzed over 80 billion client-related network transaction events and detected over 345,000 incidents across over 50 live production enterprise networks, comprised of more than 50,000 wireless access points and wired switches. The data summarizes the observation of over 683,000 client devices used by hundreds of thousands of users tracked over Nyansa's Voyance IT network analytics service.

FASTER 802.11AC W-FI INCREASING ITS PENETRATION INTO TOP PERFORMING ENTERPRISES
Of all devices under observation, 83% were 5 GHz capable. According to Nyansa's analysis, top performing enterprise Wi-Fi networks were comprised of 802.11ac (71%) and 802.11n (29%) technologies with wider 40 MHz channels used 52% of the time and 20 MHz channels being used 48%. Only 1% of enterprise networks under observation utilized new multi-user MIMO technology.
Of the wireless access point capabilities tracked during the period, 40% were 802.11ac three-stream capable. 7% were 802.11ac dual-stream capable, 22% 802.11n three-stream capable and 29% 802.11n two-stream capable.
Of all the devices analyzed across all enterprises, 50% were smart phones, 24% laptops and 7% tablets. Apple's iOS was shown to be the dominant operating system in use on 45% of all devices with Android on 22%, Apple's OSX on 13% and Windows on 13%. Of all Apple users, 73% of devices were running iOS v.9.3. For Android users, 38% were running version 6.0.
HIGHER ED NETWORKS SEE SUCCESS WITH 5 GHZ WI-FI AND SMALLER CHANNEL WIDTHS
In the higher education vertical, 802.11ac represented the most used Wi-Fi protocol at 57% with 802.11n being used within 43% of all network infrastructures. Additionally 84% of dual-band capable clients used the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band compared to only 16% using the 2.4 GHz band.
A key difference between well performing university versus enterprise Wi-Fi networks is the tendency of well performing university Wi-Fi networks overwhelmingly use 20 MHz channels. Since these environments tend to be denser and more prone to interference and noise, maximizing the number of choices for AP channel assignment yields performance improvements. Similar to Enterprise Networks, the use of 802.11ac and the efficacy of band steering 5 GHz capable clients to connect on the 5 GHz network is highly beneficial.
