New Haven Promise Congratulates First Scholarship Recipients
NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New Haven Promise awarded the first scholarships to students attending Connecticut colleges and universities this fall.
There were 151 students who applied and qualified for a Promise scholarship by living in New Haven, attending New Haven public schools, earning at least a 3.0 GPA, having 90% attendance, a positive disciplinary record and completing 10 hours of community service in their senior year. Of the 151, 110 accepted the scholarship, which can be used at any in-state two- or four-year public college or university and any in-state two- or four-year private, nonprofit college or university.
"There is no greater investment the City can make than ensuring our young people have the academic tools and financial resources to successfully compete in college," said City of New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. "This first class of New Haven Promise scholars has demonstrated hard work, academic excellence, commitment to community and ambition for the future and as a result of that earned their scholarships."
In a ceremony to honor New Haven Promise scholars, students were praised by New Haven Promise Ex-Officio Board of Directors Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., Community Foundation for Greater New Haven CEO and President William Ginsberg and Yale University President Richard Levin. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent a congratulatory video and State of Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman gave the keynote address.
