New Identity Verification System Blocks Children From Accessing Websites Without Parental Consent
SANTA ANA, Calif., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- iVeriFly, Inc., a California-based Internet technology company today announced another application for its groundbreaking identity verification system: it blocks children from accessing websites without parental consent.
Children's website operators and other sites that may gather data from children under 13 are required to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which requires them to obtain verifiable parental consent before processing a child's registration.
Unfortunately, COPPA does not define how to obtain consent, but the FTC has offered suggestions on to comply, such as sending an e-mail to the parent requiring them to respond with their digital signature, or requiring them to use a credit card to authenticate their child's age. However, the problem with these and other suggested methods is that they rely upon the accuracy of whatever e-mail address someone provides while registering.
"Any method that requires a site operator to rely upon the accuracy of an e-mail address is essentially useless," stated Seth Heyman, iVeriFly's Executive Vice President and Senior Counsel. "Virtually any child can establish a fake e-mail address through which to confirm parental consent. Other methods suggested by the FTC, such as using a credit card or requiring a parent to call a toll-free number, are complicated and costly to implement."
iVeriFly's patent-pending technology offers website owners an easier, more reliable alternative. To establish identity, iVeriFly sends an email to whatever address a child provides while registering on a website, which includes a series of random questions unique to the parent's personal history.
"Only the actual parent will be able to answer these questions, and they must all be answered correctly before the child can register," stated Mr. Heyman. "The iVeriFly system is also an ideal compliance tool for a variety of regulations that affect the financial and healthcare industries, and also protects against other types of online identity fraud, such as unauthorized credit card transactions and tax fraud."
iVeriFly is now available to companies interested in protecting themselves and their customers from online fraud.
