SOCORRO, N.M., Jan. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, January 27, New Mexico Tech students are holding a special memorial service for Alex Hernandez, a Computer Science major. Alex was killed earlier this month in Socorro, three days after his 26th birthday. The memorial service for Alex Hernandez will be held from 3 - 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 27 at Macey Center located on the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) campus.
"Alex was an advocate for peace and love for all on the earth," said Alex's father, Jorge G. Hernandez. "He was one semester shy of graduating as a Computer Science major and he had solid ambitions to start a career in artificial intelligence and biotechnology.
"Alex loved animals, nature, and believed in the power of science to change the world. Alex will be remembered as a kind, gentle, respectful young man, loved by many who will miss his smile and strong hugs."
Alex spent his life pursuing peace through science and nature, and his family has established a memorial scholarship fund ensuring their son's passion and legacy continues. Donations in Alex's honor for the "Alex Hernandez Memorial Scholarship Fund" can be made to Sandia National Laboratories Federal Credit Union, 505 293-0500.
Jorge Hernandez commented on the tragic event that took his son's life: "Our son, Alex Hernandez, had his life taken away on January 9, 2016, just 3 days after his 26th birthday on January 6, 2016. The unimaginable shock and pain is still with us. The loss of a loved one is always hard, and the loss of one of our children is only more so, a deep wound in our hearts. The investigation by the Socorro Police department has resulted in the arrest of a suspect charged with capital felony murder. We fully expect the New Mexico legal authorities to work effectively to reach a timely resolution for justice in this crime."
Funeral services for Alex were held on January 17, and were attended by hundreds of Alex's family and friends.
