Newlight's AirCarbon Wins Biomaterial of the Year

IRVINE, Calif., July 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- California-based Newlight Technologies (www.newlight.com), inventor and manufacturer of AirCarbon™, was honored to win the "Biomaterial of the Year" award for the company's AirCarbon material at an international biomaterials conference in Cologne, Germany.

The 2013 International Conference on Bio-based Plastics & Composites, organized by the nova-Institut, featured representatives from 23 countries, including representatives from DuPont, BASF, Clariant, Bayer MaterialScience, and NatureWorks.

The Biomaterial of the Year 2013 Innovation Prize was sponsored by Coperion GmbH, and, for the fifth time, conference participants voted for the winner.

"In addition to the event itself, which was great, we were honored to win the Biomaterial of the Year award," said Mark Herrema, Newlight CEO.  "Considering the many years of work it took to bring this material to market, my team was thrilled with the news."

AirCarbon is a material made by pulling carbon out of air containing greenhouse gas.  As a result of Newlight's breakthroughs in gas conversion yield and polymer performance control, AirCarbon can replicate the performance of oil-based plastics while significantly out-competing on price.

"By using carbon pulled from air, AirCarbon turns everyday goods into products that reduce the amount of carbon in the air and thus actually improve the environment," said Evan Creelman, Newlight COO.  "Combined with a cost profile that is more favorable than oil-based plastics, AirCarbon has the potential to change the world."

Newlight commenced sales of AirCarbon in 2012, and demand for the company's material has since grown significantly, with over 12.5 million pounds of AirCarbon under executed letter of intent to purchase.
