SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As communities across the country gear up for the holidays, Nextdoor (nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods, has released data on the most popular ways that neighbors celebrate the season.

While many might assume that people only celebrate the holidays with their families, according to Nextdoor's 2015 holiday survey, 45 percent of U.S. residents celebrate the holidays in some way with their neighbors. The survey also looked at residents' favorite way to celebrate the season and found that the top five ways neighbors celebrate the holidays include:

  1. Attending holiday events and attractions
  2. Looking at lights and displays
  3. Giving back/volunteering
  4. Picking out a tree
  5. Visiting Santa

This December, neighbors can use Nextdoor's Holiday Cheer Map to easily discover the best holiday spots in their area, from wonderful light displays, to cherished local charities, or affordable tree lots. Nextdoor's Holiday Cheer Map is the only way to find local holiday favorites that are recommended by neighbors who know the area best.

"The holidays are a time for us to gather with loved ones in the places we call home," says Nirav Tolia, Co-Founder and CEO of Nextdoor. "This December, the Cheer Map can help neighbors discover their communities' most beloved ways to commemorate the season."

Nextdoor's Holiday Cheer Map is available on the Web and through Nextdoor's free apps for iPhone and Android. Neighbors can access their Holiday Cheer Map by visiting nextdoor.com/cheer.
