NextEra Energy named No. 1 in its sector for an unprecedented eighth straight year on Fortune magazine's 'Most Admired Companies' list
JUNO BEACH, Fla., Feb. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE) today announced that it has been named No. 1 overall among electric and gas utilities on Fortune magazine's 2014 list of the "World's Most Admired Companies." The company, whose principal subsidiaries are Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, was named tops in its industry for an unprecedented eighth straight year.

In determining the industry rankings, approximately 15,000 senior executives, outside directors and industry analysts are surveyed and companies are rated on nine attributes: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment, quality of products/services, and global competitiveness.

- For the 10 years ended Dec. 31, 2013, NextEra Energy's total shareholder return was 271 percent, compared to 142 percent for the S&P 500 Utilities Index and 104 percent for the S&P 500 Index.
- In 2013, NextEra Energy maintained its position as the largest generator in North America of renewable energy from the wind and sun.
- The output from NextEra Energy's power plants in 2013 resulted in emissions rates of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide that were 97 percent, 80 percent and 53 percent lower, respectively, than the U.S. electric industry's average.
- FPL's typical residential customer bill is the lowest among reporting electric utilities and 28 percent lower than the national average.
