SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- EDUCATE. ADVOCATE. CURE. Last night at The Battery in San Francisco, Co-Founders Juliet de Baubigny, Nick Jonas, Sarah Lucas and Sam Talbot joined friends and supporters to celebrate the launch of BEYOND TYPE 1, a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the conversation around diabetes and bringing a new level of understanding and support to the global Type 1 community.
BEYOND TYPE 1 is here to be provocative, inclusive and disruptive. Last night's cocktail party encouraged guests to do just that! High profile guests including Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Boitano, Jonathan Tucker, Vanessa Getty and Trevor Traina came together to raise awareness and funds for the cause. During rousing speeches, the organization's founders announced that DRI, Marjorie's Fund, Nightscout, RidingONInsulin, T1International and ViaCyte will be receiving the funds due to their outstanding commitment to pursuing advocacy, education and a pathway towards a cure.
Those in attendance all received a signed compilation book of powerful images from they BEYOND TYPE 1 original Instagram campaign called "Living Beyond", showcasing the age, range and lifestyle of those living their best life with T1D, not focusing on the disease itself but the brilliance of those affected by it and how they manage it. It is BEYOND TYPE 1's mission to celebrate the real-life faces of those living with the disease, and by doing so, to change the narrative and help eradicate the stigma that comes from living with a chronic illness.
BEYOND TYPE 1 co founder Nick Jonas remarked during the event: "This is a very personal foundation for all of us as we know how isolating this disease can be. We know all too well how much encouragement in the day-to-day battle is needed, as it truly can be a struggle, and this community we are building is real. This is only the beginning of the impact we intend to make, and hopefully in my lifetime we will see a cure."
BEYOND TYPE 1 also announced their November $1Million Dollar Digital Campaign to spread awareness and generate support from friends, family and beyond, leading up to World Diabetes Day On November 14th. Beyond Type uses a VC/ Angel investor structure to ensure that they are entirely self-funded and that 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to the most promising efforts and programs working to educate, advocate and cure Type 1.

ABOUT BEYOND TYPE 1: Beyond Type 1 is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with a chronic disease. By educating the global community about this autoimmune disease, as well as providing resources and support for those living with Type 1, we will bridge the gap from diagnosis to cure, empowering people to both live well today and to fund a better tomorrow.
ABOUT Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 is an autoimmune and chronic condition that occurs when the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Because the pancreas produces little to no insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar (glucose) to energy, people with Type 1 must inject or pump insulin into their body every day in order to live. Type 1 is currently neither preventable nor curable and the cause is unknown.
