Nine Norman's Properties to Be Auctioned Online in March
BAY CITY, Mich., Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Nine retail properties owned by Norman's founder, Stanley Firkser, are heading to the auction block on March 24 & 25. After hitting his eightieth birthday, Firkser liquidated the contents of his iconic discount store chain in 2014. In less than a month, the commercial buildings from 3,800 square feet to over 50,000 square feet will have new owners.

Firkser's father started the retail chain in Bay City in the 1930's, and Firkser came on board in the 1950's. As the business scaled, so did its real estate holdings across Michigan. The nine properties up for bid represent just the first wave of approximately fifty properties to be auctioned online this spring. These first locations to sell are located in Bad Axe, Bay City, East Tawas, Gaylord, Sabewaing, and Standish.
Steve Schout, who is managing the auctions for Platinum Bid Auction Service, addressed the bittersweet nature of this sale, "It's exciting for us to be a part of such a unique project—it really is. At the same time, it's sad to see a distinct part of the local culture going away." Schout added, "You hate to see all the jobs fade away; but at the same time, it's an opportunity now for someone else in the community to make something of these different locations."
The stores are empty now, an odd seen for their faithful customers over the years who have come to know the retailer as a place jam-packed with hunting gear and clothes. The properties range from historic buildings to pristine retail centers; and there are some adjacent lots in the mix, too. Due to the various locations of the properties, there will be no live, on-site bidding. "Each property will be sold individually online. It's basically nine auctions—each with a different ending time," explained Schout.
