NLC Statement on Fire Fighters Deaths in Arizona
AVONDALE, Ariz., July 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National League of Cities (NLC) President Marie Lopez Rogers, mayor, Avondale, AZ responds to yesterday's deaths of the 19 members of the Prescott, AZ Fire Department yesterday:
"This is a somber day for Arizona. As the mother of firefighters, I join the entire nation in offering our sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the Granite Mountain Hotshots that were killed on duty battling the Yarnell Hill fire. They demonstrated the commitment seen so often in first responders around the nation: They were the first to run towards trouble, putting themselves in harm's way in the hopes of creating a better outcome for their neighbors and relatives.
"We are grateful for the service of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and grieve with their families, especially the family in my own community that lost their son. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with their families during this devastating time."
