North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives Urge Preparation in Advance of Hurricane Season
RALEIGH, N.C., May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Next week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week, and to recognize the occasion, North Carolina's electric cooperatives are encouraging residents to create a plan that will help keep their families and homes safe during hurricane season. Tropical Storm Alberto, which formed off the coast of South Carolina last weekend, is an early reminder that all North Carolinians need to have a plan in place now because a reliable plan is your best defense against a major storm.
A smart and dependable plan should include the following items:
- Have an evacuation plan ready for your family at a moment's notice. Remember to include pets.
- Create a disaster supply kit with medicine and other first-aid items, a two-week supply of bottled water, non-perishable food, a non-electric can opener, cash, credit cards and identification.
- Make sure flashlights are in easy reach with fully-charged batteries in case the power is out.
- Have a battery-operated radio on hand to listen to weather forecasts and storm updates.
Communicate the plan to everyone in your family and be sure to tune in to your local radio news station during a storm emergency.
