NutriBullet Launches Nationwide "#BeTheNextUNI" Campaign to Help Children Develop Healthy Eating Habits
Five schools will receive $10,000 to run a Nutritional Smoothie Bar
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NutriBullet, LLC., a premiere health and wellness brand and creator of the NutriBullet—a high-performance nutrition extractor, announced today the launch of a nationwide campaign "#BeTheNextUNI" to help children develop healthy eating habits. The program offers five schools the opportunity to win $10,000 in fresh produce, NutriBullet® units and NutriBullet nutritional team's classroom guidelines and materials needed to set up a their own school smoothie bar or "Blast Bar."
#BeTheNextUNI aims to give schools across the country a chance to learn and implement healthy eating habits through hands-on food preparation using fresh produce and the NutriBullet. The campaign is modeled after the original UNI Project, in which the NutriBullet sent a Registered Dietitian to University High School (UNI) in Los Angeles to work with students for 90 days. Registered Nurses were sent to take anthropometric data and cholesterol levels of students in the program at the start and completion of the study. During the course of the program's three months, a group of 46 high school students learned the importance of maximizing their intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, and began teaching others, including peers and their parents, the importance of a healthy diet.
"With the NutriBullet Blast Bar we were able to discuss the importance of nutrients in a way that I've never been able to do before," said Kerri Eich Reiners, the Director of Health and Environmental Sciences at UNI. "When students ask for more vegetables and fruits – that is a big deal."
At the end of the three-month study classroom study, results were clear and positive: Data indicated an overall decrease in the average weight, waist circumference, and cholesterol of the class, while students reported increased energy, focus, and feelings of wellbeing.
#BeTheNextUNI hopes to extend the success of the original UNI Project across the nation, a goal formally introduced by the NutriBullet team at the 2014 Leaders Summit for the Alliance of a Healthier Generation in Washington D.C. The Summit provides students, teachers, and administrators with resources and support to create healthier school environments, and awards schools for their efforts in the fight against childhood obesity. NutriBullet screened a documentary following the progress of the original UNI Project at the 2014 Leaders Summit and discussed details of #BeTheNextUNI.
"There is still a lot of work to be done but #BeTheNextUNI is a great place to start," said NutriBullet's Resident Dietitian Sarah Lefkowitz who worked on the UNI Project. "The excitement and discussions we had at the Leaders Summit after showing the BeTheNext UNI Documentary solidifies our belief that we are onto something that could be a real game changer."
To submit to #BeTheNextUNI, applicants should complete the online application posted on BeTheNextUNI.com and upload a video showcasing their school. Submissions are open now through November 1st. Winners will be selected by NutriBullet judges and will be announced in January 2015 on the site. To watch the full The UNI Project Documentary, please visit: BeTheNextUNI.com.
