NEW YORK, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 11, 2010 American Ballroom Theater, the home of the internationally recognized Dancing Classrooms program, will celebrate 15 years of serving NYC children with their annual Benefit Gala Dance. The Gala begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Roosevelt Hotel, Madison Avenue at 5th Street in New York City with all proceeds going to support the NYC Dancing Classrooms program.
Nora C. and James M. Orphanides, serving as Chairs of this years' Gala, will welcome nearly 300 guests to an evening of elegant dancing and performances by the Dancing Classrooms Youth Dance Company. The Youth Dance Company is composed of children who began ballroom dancing when they took the Dancing Classrooms program in their NYC schools.
Since 1994, Dancing Classrooms, a social development program that utilizes ballroom dancing as a tool to change the lives of children, has been provided to 128,000 NYC school children. Created by ballroom dancing legend Pierre Dulaine, Dancing Classrooms was provided to 24,000 NYC school children in 222 schools and nearly 50,000 children in 523 schools in 19 cities during the 2009-2010 school year. Dancing Classrooms was featured in the 2005 documentary Mad Hot Ballroom and the movie Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas.
