NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NYU's College of Global Public Health (NYU CGPH) announced today its plans for a full-time, three-term degree program, taking students to three global sites for a unique one-year Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.

Beginning in June 2016, the program's first group of students will start the one-year program in New York City, spend the second term in Accra, Ghana, and then conclude the program in the United Arab Emirates at NYU Abu Dhabi.

Future programs may take place on other NYU global network campuses, including Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Shanghai, Sydney and Washington, DC.

"No university has a greater global presence than NYU," said Dr. Robert Berne, Executive Vice President for Health.  "The world's most pressing health emergencies demand new education models for committed global health students.  This new degree program is a timely response to the growing need for entrepreneurial thinking in the pursuit of innovative solutions to global health crises."

The CGPH Cross-Continental MPH will train cohorts of highly-motivated recent undergraduates, arming them with the skills required to embrace the enormous challenges that lie ahead in global public health through a practice-based, skills-focused curriculum.  The intensive one-year program will then be followed by practice-based, internship where students will integrate public health theory and models.

"Our Cross-Continental MPH students will benefit from NYU's extraordinary relationships with international agencies and nonprofit organizations, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations, UNICEF and HealthRight International," said CGPH Dean, Dr. Cheryl G. Healton.  "Our scholars will have an unparalleled year of opportunities before them, including the chance to conduct fieldwork in Africa, chronic disease research in the Middle East or social entrepreneurship research with business ventures in New York City," she said.

Initial program tracks include Epidemiology and Global Health. The applied global approach will include epidemiologic principles, public health surveillance methods, field investigations, as well as survey and sample development. The Global Health track will focus on public health systems, including methodologies to utilize large and country-level data sets to compare health and economic systems.  NYU CGPH plans to expand degree offerings in the future.

"NYU's College of Global Public Health is working with the University of Ghana to allow our students to study side-by-side with Cross-Continental students," said Dr. Richard Adanu, Obstetrician Gynecologist and Dean of the University of Ghana School of Public Health. "UGSPH and NYU are dedicated to learning from each other as we collaborate in this new exciting venture," he added.

Dr. Hervé Crès, NYU Abu Dhabi Dean of Social Sciences, said: "The UAE is at the cross-roads of numerous and various pressing public health challenges, affecting very diverse populations. Centering a portion of this global learning program at NYUAD will give students a unique perspective on these challenges, and help contribute to solutions for some of the most pressing public health issues of our time."

"We are impressed by the work of the CGPH and look forward to the opportunity to train our staff in conjunction with the intensive J-term opportunities that this new innovative program presents," said Dr. Martin Bloem, Chief of Nutrition Services with the United Nation's World Food Programme.

"Students of Cross-Continental MPH will benefit from the unique collaboration of global public health professionals and faculty.  We are thrilled to offer this exciting academic opportunity for both program's students and our faculty," said Dr. Bernadette Boden-Albala, Professor and Associate Dean of Program Development, CGPH.
