OATRA Continues Fight Against SB273
SB273 Threatens to Scrap Ohio Jobs as the Recycler Industry Is Damaged
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Wednesday, the Ohio Auto and Truck Recyclers Association (OATRA) membership joined together to fight for fair business practices and speak against Senate Bill 273. Members spoke out against the measure at the House Insurance Committee, arguing against allowing unregulated buyers to purchase salvage vehicles within the state. This practice would negatively impact small businesses and the local economy by providing a loophole in the current regulatory structure.
If SB273 were to pass, it would allow individual buyers the ability to bypass existing state laws. Outside individuals would not be required to follow the same rules for disposing of toxic and chemical waste that harms the environment. Additionally, chop shops and others involved in criminal activity will have easier access to vehicles that can be used to hide stolen property.
"The significant damage SB273 will have on the Ohio job market cannot be overstated," said Jim McKinney , President, Ohio Auto & Truck Recyclers Association. "This legislation will cause Ohio to lose jobs and taxable revenue. This bill would pad the pockets of salvage auctions and insurance companies at the expense of jobs generated by small businesses in Ohio. The members of the House Insurance Committee should not allow this to happen."
OATRA is asking all of its membership to call their local State Representatives and voice their concern of this bill. Community members and business owners should take action. The bill has been scheduled on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 for a third hearing. A committee vote may be taken during the hearing. To join the fight, please visit www.OATRA.net.
