Ocean Bio-Chem, Inc.'s Disinfectant Product PERFORMACIDE® Can Prevent Norovirus, A Major Cause of Disease Outbreaks
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ocean Bio-Chem, Inc. (NASDAQ: OBCI), today said its PERFORMACIDE® hard surface disinfectant is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency against norovirus, the number one cause of disease outbreak caused by contaminated food in the U.S.
According to the government's Center for Disease Control, the norovirus can cause inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in America, causing up to 21 million illnesses, 71,000 hospitalizations and 800 deaths annually.
The norovirus is highly contagious, so proper hygiene and disinfecting practices are necessary to prevent outbreaks in restaurants or cafeterias. Ocean Bio-Chem's PERFORMACIDE®, which is registered at the EPA as a hospital grade, can be applied to surfaces such as door knobs, chairs, table tops and salad bar guards to help eliminate the chance of a norovirus outbreak. It also should be used in kitchens, where it will kill these microorganisms that some traditional disinfectants do not eliminate.
PERFORMACIDE also can eliminate the problem of norovirus on cruise ships by keeping hard surfaces cleaned, disinfected and sanitized. A norovirus outbreak can spread very rapidly in the close quarters on a cruise ship and a wonderful vacation can be spoiled.
"Our product also kills HIV-1, MRSA, hepatitis and tuberculosis microorganisms," said Peter Dornau, Ocean Bio-Chem CEO and President. "It is easy to use, requiring no wiping or rinsing. PERFORMACIDE® can be sprayed, mopped or sponged and allowed to air dry so there is no risk of spreading microorganisms to other surfaces."
