PDAAG Leary Delivers Reentry Remarks – In remarks at the Vermont Reentry Summit in Montpelier, Vt., on Friday, September 9, Mary Lou Leary, OJP's Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, spoke about the work of the Interagency Reentry Council, created to coordinate and improve federal reentry efforts, and the more than $100 million in Second Chance Act grants awarded last year to assist juvenile and adult reentry programs.

Prison Rape Hearings, September 15-16 – The Review Panel on Prison Rape will hold hearings in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, September 15, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, September 16, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Office of Justice Programs, 810 7th Street. The purpose of the hearings is to assist the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) in identifying common characteristics of rape victims and perpetrators in adult U.S. jails with the highest and lowest incidence of rape. The hearings are based on the BJS report, Sexual Victimization in Prisons and Jails Reported By Inmates, 2008-2009, which is available at: http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/pub/pdf/svpjri0809.pdf.
Thinking Ahead: October is Crime Prevention Month – In 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) designated October as Crime Prevention Month. The Bureau of Justice Assistance, along with NCPC, will Celebrate Safe Communities in October with weekly themes highlighted on NCPC's Website. The themes will be: Home Safety, October 3-8; Crime Reporting and Community Engagement, October 9 -15; School and Campus Safety, October 16-22, and Drug Abuse and Prevention, October 23-29. http://www.ncpc.org/programs/celebrate-safe-communities
