Oguchi Onyewu to Star in the 2010 FIFA World Cup with U.S. National Team
An outstanding comeback for a key leader
CHICAGO, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- After much anticipation, International soccer star, Oguchi "Guch" Onyewu will be representing the U.S. National Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa, June 11th – July 11th, 2010. This announcement came after speculation on whether Onyewu would return to the playing field in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Onyewu suffered a ruptured patellar tendon against Costa Rica on Oct. 14, 2009 in the U.S. team's final World Cup qualifying game. Through intensive rehabilitation and sheer perseverance, Onyewu has made a complete recovery.
"Having the opportunity to play in the World Cup for the second time is truly an honor and I am humbled," says Onyewu. "I'm recovered and ready to perform on the world stage of soccer."
As a global soccer star, Onyewu was born in the United States but is of Nigerian decent. The 2010 World Cup is uniquely special to Onyewu because it is the first time the FIFA World Cup will be played in Africa.
"This moment is historic and deeply meaningful to me as both an African and an American," says Onyewu.
Standing at 6'4", Onyewu is respected globally as one of the most dominant defenders in the game. He currently plays for AC Milan and is only the second American to play for a Series A Team. His birth name, Oguchialu, means "God fight for me." Onyewu is eager to fight with his teammates to proudly represent the United States in the world's single most watched sporting event.
Onyewu debuted his skills for the U.S. National Team in October of 2004 against Panama. He scored his first goal for the team in the 2005 Gold Cup against Honduras and was named to the tournament's Best XI. Onyewu played for the U.S. in all three games at the 2006 World Cup and has been a fixture ever since.
